The true measure of DART’s success will be exactly how much it diverted the asteroid’s trajectory, so the world can start preparing to defend itself against bigger asteroids that could head our way in the future. It will likely take Earth-bound telescopes and radars at least a week for a first estimate of how much the asteroid’s orbit has been altered, and three or four weeks before there is a precise measurement, Carnelli said. – ‘Huge implications’ – “I am expecting a much bigger deflection than we had planned,” he said. That would have “huge implications in planetary defence because it means that this technique could be used for much larger asteroids”, Carnelli added. Therefore, give us more money. It worked better than we thought, and there is no way for anyone to verify our claim other than us.

Still not as good as rocketing up there with some roughnecks, drilling some holes, dropping a couple nukes, and hightailing back home

You know, asteroids can be viewed and their trajectories measured by these things that civilians can access all the time called telescopes, right?

Interesting.

If the deflection is significantly different than they expected, why should we trust that a future endeavor will deflect an asteroid away from us and not into us?

This is cool but I’d rather have Steve Buscemi save the world

I'd much rather spend my tax dollars on this than many things the federal government spends money on...like climate change bull shite for one.

Because it will have already been hurtling towards us before we decide to swat it.

"Hurtling towards us" doesn't mean a guaranteed hit.

This may shock some of you know-it-alls but asteroid orbits are not exact and impacts are a prediction.

So the future debate is going to be, what is the necessary estimate to send up a dart to change the trajectory?

Well, they sent the probe up 10 months ago and hit that asteroid straight in the arse. I'm going roll with their projections vs the wait-and-see model.
