Well this is a first for me-

I've suffered from both sleep paralysis and night terrors all of my life. The night terrors have significantly waned as I've grown older; they occur maybe once every nine months to a year. They used to emotionally affect me for hours after the event. Now, though, I've learned to cope with them and can usually resume sleep within a half-hour or so.

Sleep paralysis is a different story however. While the incidences have decreased in adulthood, they have maintained a frequency of about every other month. I've seen doctors about this and the answer is generally that it is something I'll just have to deal with. Like the night terrors, I've learned to cope. They don't leave me with a sense of dread or anything of the sort. They are more of a nuisance than anything else.

Last night was a different story.

For the first time in my life I had a dream within a dream. This wasn't some slight occurrence. This was dramatic. I had a nightmare; from which I "awoke." I actually went on for some time with the awareness of the first/inner dream. Acting as I would had I awoken from any dream. However, things got very weird and I soon realized that I was still asleep (lucid dreaming).

As is common with the lucid dream state, it ended quickly and I awoke from the second/outer dream. As if that wasn't enough (inception and lucid dreaming) I was in a full-blown bout of sleep paralysis. This lasted for probably only a couple of minutes. I was on my couch and had managed to get myself about three-quarters off of the couch with my chest and head still resting upon the seat before I finally fully awoke.

It took me a few minutes to process and comprehend what had just occurred. Such a myriad of conditions to attack at once was somewhat unsettling. I wasn't able to make myself go back to sleep and eventually hit up the local Starbucks at opening time.

The sleep paralysis is just a fact of life for me and I'm not concerned with that. The night terrors, though a bitch and certainly not fun, I've learned to accept. Lucid dreams are rare, fleeting, and can be interesting, so I'm not worried about that. I think I was most rattled by the dream within a dream. Not so much that it occurred, but by the realness of the second/outer dream.

I haven't sleep walked (slept walk? slept walked? ) in years, but the power of that dream had me wondering if I didn't really have a dream within a dream, but instead maybe I never fully awoke from the inner dream and was walking around functioning in a semi-awake state.

It was just odd and I was wondering how many of my OT brethren have suffered from these conditions? Have any of you had combinations such as my event last night?

After drinking way too much at a party, I woke up drinking at a bar wondering what happened to the party, then woke up at home.

That's about all I got.

Buddy of mine has sleep walking problems. One morning he wakes up and noticed a bottle of coke and a pack of cigarettes on his nightstand. He thanks his wife , she said i didn't go you did last night around midnight. He didn't remember ever going to slthe store. Scared the shite out of them knowing that he drove his truck while sleeping.

I have had them all except night terrors. I remember once having woke up 4 times realizing I am still dreaming (dream within a dream within a dream within a dream). It has happened a few times since.

I find that sleeping on my side rather than my back prevents sleep paralysis.

I've had this happen a few times... it's trippy as frick, and I when finally wake up, I'm in a state of mindless confusion... it usually takes me a minute or two, to fully understand that I'm actually awake, and even then, I am doubtful

Now couple that with sleep paralysis (I've never had it), and I can only imagine how freaked out you were

I've experienced a dream within a dream, lucidly with sleep paralysis twice before. Not fun at all

Interesting. Now that you've mentioned that; I do believe the majority of my sleep paralysis occurrences have taken place while not in my bed (chair, couch, camping, passed out drunk on the floor, whathaveyou), but there have been times when it's happened in my regular bed.

Dreams within dreams are pretty cool. no need to worry. I woke up once from a dream and told my friends my dream, then realized I was still dreaming. Told them I was dreaming and they laughed at me....as I "disappeared" they were hollering..."look he IS dreaming".

Been "stuck" in a nightmare before, worst feeling ever in a dream......knew what time it was, knew how I was sleeping, knew how long I had been asleep, knew I had just awakened and went back to sleep and still couldn't wake myself up. FINALLY, Woke up in sweat and breathing hard.

I should say, the second dream after I woke up from the first dream was more of a combination of hallucination and dream. I only lucid dream or experience sleep paralysis when I take midday naps though

It must've been so good that my brain couldn't process the awesomeness and I've completely forgotten.

My wife has woke up a few times to catch me sleep wanking. Usually it's brought on by not getting any for a few nights. Crazy shite, I have no recollection

I feel for ya. I suffer from sleep paralysis and I have had 3 episodes in the last year. Each time I tried to call for help to my wife but of course I couldn't move or speak. Some scary shite. I have found that it always happens to me if I fall asleep laying on my back so I make a habit out of sleeping on my side.
