This is not really millenial fault. The prices are outrageous and old people won't die out and leave their houses behind.

If they'd die earlier like their grandparents, their grandchild could get their house and inheritance. Instead they are draining our social security.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I think the generation argument is the most retarded thing on the internet. The entire premise of the argument is false.

Here's the thing. No generation is better or worse than any other. They are just different and are products of their environment.

See here is the exact problem. You assume that millennials are all Bernie supporters who believe this bullshite.

My point is that the professional landscape has totally changed since my parents went to college in the late 70's early 80's.

1. You used to be able to work and afford to pay college (a good college). That's gone.

2. Before you would work hard in one industry and expect to move up with good performance. You could stay with one company for a long time. This is no longer the case.

3. The biggest one is that middle-class, blue collar jobs could provide your family a good living. This is no longer the case. It is damn near impossible to raise a family on those salaries anymore.

Except it is not bullshite. It is the truth. If they DID believe it they would be better off. I am your parents age...I went to college which was reasonable. I have worked pretty hard (for a lazy arse, anyway) and understand just paying folks money for nothing is NOT the answer....(see AFDC, subsidized housing, food stamps, SS e

social media and narcissism can be blamed, no doubt, but that's not the whole story.

Efficiencies and technology has meant 1 person can do today what 4 were needed for 40 years ago.
There will be a guaranteed minimum income established in this country sooner than later.

Actually that's wrong. You can actually make a very good living off of a blue collar job. It does however require hard work, harder work than it did a generation ago. Unions are going the way of the dinosaur. A welder, electrician, plumber, pipe-fitter etc. can make over six figures but require hard work and "soft skills" like being reliable and and independent and having initiative. These soft skills are what millennial lack. Gone are the days of being a menial employee on an assembly line with no real skills and being able to provide a good life for you family though. Now you have to choose between doing "hard work" or getting a real degree and becoming a "professional."

Good eye.

FWIW, I'm 28, married, homeowner, full time job, working on my MBA at night and on weekends, which my company is paying for. I have very mild debt and try to invest in retirement and my future as much as I can.

I have some room to gripe about the bullshite COL prices we have been left with and the draining of social security.

Boomers made a culture where everyone had to go to college. High school kids are all being told by their parents that college is the only option. This has left us with an over-saturated potential employee pool, a million people with student loan debt, and housing prices making home-ownership basically unattainable until your late 20's/early 30's...if you're lucky. Our parents seem to think everyone should be able to afford a big house with a lawn right after college and have the woman stay home to clean and cook. That isn't a reality in the modern US.

Mass amounts of labor jobs are being sent overseas by boomer-run companies and the ones that remain have been deemed "inferior" by our culture that was built by boomers.

I, for one, wish my parents had told me to become a Master Plumber. I know a guy who does high-end bathroom remodels, owns his own small company, and clears well over 200k doing something he loves.

High jack: I too have a mortgage, young family, and getting my MBA at night. I have basically had to stop putting into my 401k to pay my bills and keep from borrowing money. Are you able to save at all?

But I also see a lot of people in my generation that refuse to get a career job to pay the bills and would rather work in the service industry, while sitting on 100k in student loan debt for their Gender Studies degree.

I blame those people just as much. I have friends that won't get big boy jobs until they "find just the right one". That's embarrassing. I have had several jobs I hated just so I could pay the bills. I currently sit in a cubicle and don't to do this forever, but I know its what I gotta do to get where I wanna be.

Millenials like "instant gratification", but Boomers instilled that in this generation. Equally at fault.

Barely. I put in my 401k up to the employee match so I don't lose out on free money, but my Roth IRA has fallen to the wayside to pay off some debt. Its really worrisome to not have a robust savings account in case of emergency and definitely keeps me up at night.

I am lucky that my wife and I have great parents that would help us in case of a disaster, god forbid. But other than that, we are in limbo in terms of "accessible savings".
