Did you look at the inside of the doorbell mechanism itself? The problem is likely there.

It's because you have no friends to visit you.

A lot of times the transformer goes bad, and no longer sends the voltage out.
The transformer is the most common problem for traditional doorbells, but aince the light on the button is functioning, I suspect this is not the case though perhaps a lower voltage would still light the button but not actuate the plunger.

Or the chime inside breaks.
Definitely a possibility here. If he has a second button that still functions (back door or door in garage maybe) that would probably rule that out and if it doesn't, it would make that more likely. It is possible he has issues with the contacts on the button itself, I've actually had an issue like this once. Just bought a replacement button. OP could test it out by shorting the wires on the button to see if the bell rings.

Doorbell doesn't ring anymore, but the button outside is still lit up. Any ideas?
Doorbells are fickle. Mine used to just go off at random when there was lightening/thunder outside.
Then it got wet when we pressure washed the patio. Started going off at random. I just had to unwire it all together.
