Dave worked with the Colonel. That's partly why they shared similar thought on being in their own commercials.

If you know Norm McDonald's comedy, then it makes sense. If not, I'm sure it seems odd. I personally think the commercials are pretty funny, but I'm a NM fan.

I either FFW, hit mute, or pay no attention to commercials.
I've seen Hammond and Norm dressed as the Colonel in KFC commercials, but I literally do not know what they say in them. Thus, not confused.
