Dead on the money. The worst part is, people tolerate it and find it conventional.

You don't want to be around Tulane and Broad. Not a safe area.

What's your budget? If I remember correctly it was around $1000?
You can find some places (1br 1ba) around that price point Uptown.

Is this area really that bad?
Its not great, but Gentrification is starting to really take off in that area. Its changing.

You are correct. you and your SO looking for two roommates?
Edited to say that we could probably venture to around 1200-1300 a month and be good

no problem... you can try Crescent Club as well.
Those are the 3 mid-city apartment complexes in that price range.
I would definitely say Crescent or Marquis over the Preserve. Preserve is kind of rundown a little bit. I'm really not a fan of the Preserve.
All 3 of those places offer mixed income living, so you may pay full price and have someone next to you in the same floorplan paying 3 times less than you are a month.
Craigslist is also a decent option. They have some really good gems on there with some reputable folks who have done some renovations in good neighborhoods (or good set of blocks since this is what NOLA is now).
Either way I think you need to tour those 3 apartments BEFORE you rent sight unseen at any of them.

I've been looking there as well. I think I'm even more confused on where I want to be at this point

Marquis, Preserve -- area is ok, changing day by day, close to school. If your are not a pussy there is a bus route that takes you downtown.
Saulet -- lots of students, close to warehouse district, kinda crappy but safe (despite what idiots in this thread think, that area is now surrounded by $500,000 houses.
Either one is ok, do it for 1 year to learn the city and where you want to live, then find something different.

I know the city somewhat well, I did my undergrad at Tulane but I stayed on campus all 4 years so I really don't know places to live outside of uptown

so you would recommend saulet?

I have friends that stay there and go to LSU med. They love it. It's literally right by school.

I lived there for 9 months during a housing search and renovation several years ago, was ok but nothing special. Its generally safe and easy access to downtown, but wouldn't live there for more than 1 year. Might also check out the American Can on Orleans and Bayou St. John. Not sure about the apartments but the location is phenomenal.

My downstairs neighbors are probably moving out soonish, I think they are moving to another city for graduate school. Their place would be a 1br 1ba and would be in your price range.

I keep hearing about the area around Bayou St. John, what is the deal with this place? People seem to really talk it up but I know nothing about it

Easy to get anywhere in the City, great shopping, eating, and drinking nearby, the Bayou, the new Lafitte greenway, access to public transit, close to new hospital district. Just don't know much about the American Can, but if you can find a rental house in that general area do it.
