Didn't know that breaking the law was a death sentence

Its not, and shouldn't be. But honestly when someone has a long history of run ins with the law and makes the decision to resist arrest, I have very few fricks to give about what happens to them.

Death by cop averages to about 1000 per year and that number has been fairly consistent for a while.

A small fraction of those are deemed illegitimate

This doesn't distinguish between people that were armed, unarmed, posing a threat, etc.

Eta
It also says shot to death, so not sure if people like George Floyd, Eric Gray, and the guy selling cigarettes in NY would be counted.

Blacks are underrepresented in terms of police killing.
If you adjust for their rate of violent crime.

Most of the studies break it down in confrontations with police per capita and find no support from the data that one race/ethnicity is killed at a higher rate by police.

This. I know you have a legal background. Are you involved in criminal law?

The overall problem with this not many people are talking about although the crime rate is almost at historic lows, particularly for violent crimes the number of people killed by police is actually rising. This is a continuation of the militarization of the our domestic police force.
