I've see that plane around before. Interesting pattern.

I used to be able to tell what it was before looking by the engine noise/airframe whistle, harder to do with airliners anymore but I can usually identify the military planes, especially your Herk

I used to be the same way. My dad was a Huey instructor pilot at mother Rucker and I could ID a Huey from 2 counties over just with the thump in my chest. Used to blow my friends' minds growing up.

Now, with the 8 bladed props, the Herk sounds like angry bees. Not as throaty.

Thread hijack:

I’ve got my oral today and checkride tomorrow for the old throaty version of the Herk.

Limit your time on this and the interweb. You only have so many minutes and days.

Those planes are going to crash into each other.

Flight aware is one of my stickied links

I sit under the landing pattern for EWR so when I see an overhead plane I try to look up where it's coming from. Getting better at spotting the differences between A320, 739s, etc at 8,000'

And when you could tell the difference between the variants of Huey's, the 205 and 212 by hearing alone, then you know you haven't lost all of your hearing yet.

When storms are on the way in and they're about to start diverting everybody, is it better to listen to approach or tower?

Oh yeah. That one has a lot more military aircraft. Fun to watch the tankers circle and the trainer jets chase each other around.

I check it out frequently. Now check out Marine Traffic. The red ships are oil tankers.

Approach control. We don’t switch over to tower until we’re about 7-5 miles from landing.

Approach control takes over from center controllers about 40-30 miles from the airport.

I got some great footage one night over Detroit. Video is easier to get.

Another time I would’ve had great footage over I Minneapolis. My piece of shite Sony camcorder that recorded straight to DVDRs trashed it.

I do. My youngest daughter (no pics) is a flight attendant and I follow her trips.
