Depends on the country. I was born in Australia to American citizens. Prior to 1986, Australia had birthright citizenship. I was born in 1989 so by then a child acquired Australian citizenship if born to an Australian citizen or automatically gained citizenship on his 10th birthday if still living in the country.

I dated a girl whose father was British and her mother was born in Louisiana. When she turned 18 she had to decide which country to be a citizen of she lived in England from 1-11 years old and in americacever since
