Well why do doctors, hospitals and other healthcare professionals bill so high when they have to write off so much of that?

I base mine off my highest reimbursing insurance. Too charge less would be to piss away profits on those particular plans.

Text in OP was written by an ER doc, no?

It is completely true. The physical exam is a thing of the past. Many just read the triage note and order tests from just inside the door of the room. CT has virtually replaced X-rays.

Never seen an insurance pay near $350 for an initial in office visit with no procedure. But that's a pretty common charge

None of these numbers are real anymore. GP and surgeons. All of it. The "bill" is a pie in the sky number.

Don't know where some come up with it. I don't screw my cash pt's. I set mine at 10% over BCBS rates. There are a few that pay better. Occasionally, we will adjust charges up based on those. Cash price is different if people are willing to pay at the time of service. Some insurances pay a percentage of billed charges so these places jack up the prices. BCBS basically dictates mine since they are probably 85% of my private insurance claims.

It's not as bad as some make it out to be, but it is bullshite that we cannot profit from our own success due to self referral laws. It's fricking ridiculous that a doctor cannot own a hospital, pharmacy, medical supply company, home health agency etc. The BIG money in medicine is made by everyone else in medicine besides the doc's, but it's ALL dependent on our work and signatures. I'm glad I'm married to her, but it's bullshite that my wife makes more owning/operating a pharmacy than most docs I know. Specialists included. She has zero call. Techs do most of her work. Insurance is like $500/year.

My point is that without these bullshite laws that prevent us from capitalizing on our own success, we'd be the ones making money off these ventures. I'm talking medical businesses, and not businesses in general.
