We have a tradition of firing people when they put in their 2 weeks notice. At will employment is great.

I can understand retirements, maybe a lunch or a small reception with cake. Maybe a woman quitting work to have a baby and raise the child. MAYBE even returning to school with a lunch.

The one's that have gotten me pissed were the going away deals for people leaving for a "better" (higher paying) job. Why the frick should one place of business celebrate for that? I tagged along to a lunch like this once and made it a point to make my feelings known about it. Now, when invited, I turn down the invitation along with the reasoning.

So you think people should be stuck in their current jobs for the rest of their lives? What's the difference in why they are leaving? I agree that every Joe Blow whose been there for 6 months shouldn't be getting a parade, but if someone's been there for 20 years, I don't care if they are retiring or going work somewhere else. It's still saying goodbye to a friend and someone who's put a lot into that company.

Now if they are leaving to go to a competitor and steal your clients, that's different. But otherwise I get it. Usually people may get a lunch. People with like 30 years have gotten a "happy hour" paid for by the company on their last day. But mostly now, you are leaving because you were laid off

someone always bust open the rest room door and takes a Polaroid of them sitting on the can.

We usually go out to eat after work or something, maybe get lunch ordered or something during the day if the worker has been here a while.

Similiar to others, if they haven't been here long, it's kind of like.. good luck to you..!
