I'd let them tell me how they want to be categorized. For example, my best fiend married a black woman and has two kids with her. They raised the kids for the most in a white world. The kids identify as white although they are dark skinned and would not be identified as white by sight.
Let people be what they're comfortable being.

I call them light skinned, high yella, red bone, mixed, dark black, brown, black as night, and purple. Those are your choices.

I have a good friend that is mixed. He is black when it benefits him and white the rest of the time.

Yeah,definitely should've gone and asked for opinions of strangers on the street. This was the only option i had to gauge society's thought on the matter without feeling awkward.

Honestly, it depends on what their features are.
I know two girls (sisters) who are half white/half black but their physical traits are different (one is darker with dark eyes, the other has lighter brown hair and lighter eyes). Knowing them and their parents I'd say they're mixed race, but if I didn't know them I'd probably describe the darker one as "a light-skinned black girl" and the other as mixed.

I have never heard that saying. I thought he was referring to the "one drop rule" that implied if you had one drop of black blood/one ancestor who was black, then you were considered black. LINK

I have a friend who is Dominican. Even though he is really more so Hispanic than anything else, most people think of him as being black because he is dark skinned. Just how it goes.
ETA: I guess in this country probably just about all black people are mixed to some extent.
