To my understanding, the problem wasn't that she hung out with jerks--the problem was she couldn't find friends who accepted her as a mixed race person. She identified through her upbringing as white, but was not considered white by the whites she knew. And the blacks she became acquainted with--fellow athletes--considered her white: an African-American who was desperate to be Caucasian.
She related several racial incidents to me, coming from both sides, that were nothing but sad, especially for such a fantastic young person as she is.
Like I said though, she transferred to a west coast university with, apparently, a far different racial and ethnic climate than the SEC school. She recently graduated and is now working for a television station in pursuit of a career in sports journalism. She's happy, life is good and the future is hers for the taking--thank God.
