These threads are so awesome. I like to bookmark them for when friends say most people in Louisiana wouldn't believe in something as silly as demons. I then pull up this nonsense and watch their jaws drop as they realize that a sizable contingent of their peers actually believe in malevolent demonic possession despite what we know about the ability of the brain to perceive things incorrectly.

Man is not as smart as he thinks he is.

1 Corinthians 3:18

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become "fools" so that you may become wise.

No I have never seen a demon but I do believe in them.

I cannot believe in things for which there is no supporting evidence.

So doubling down and declaring belief in something for which there is no evidence does what...exactly?

Does someone who has schizophrenia telling you that just because you don't hear the voices he hears does not mean they are not real convince you of anything other than his mental illness? We already understand the human brain is capable of causing visions so real they are indistinguishable from reality. We KNOW this. And yet, when confronted with something strange most people default to believing the unbelievable in the face of not having anything like supporting evidence to prove it happened.

Why? The answer is obvious. Because THEY are special. THEIR experience MUST be true, because it "happened" to them. Sure...the guy over there who says he was abducted by aliens and probed is a fricking loon...but I know demons are real because I saw them...

There is a ton of evidence to support it. Thousands of eye witnesses and testimony. You just choose not to believe it.

Eye witness testimony does not equal hard evidence.

That is not evidence of anything except that people are easily fooled by their own senses and biased towards looking for supernatural explanations of natural occurrences.

Also said about:

Bigfoot
Aliens abduction
Loch Ness
Fairies
Etc, etc, etc...

What makes your claim special...or do you believe all outlandish claims simply because there is someone out there that declares vigorously that they are true?

I have a feeling you're more discerning than that, right?

To be brutally honest, it was this board that caused me to be as vocal about my atheism

If you are an athetist then why do you care if others believe in god and the Bible? Shouldn't you just be care free and happy instead of trying to force your believes on others? If you think your right then why do you care about others?

The bible tells Christians to witness to others and thus this is the reason some try to witness. My question is not about my faith but to get a better understanding of yours.

You can make the same argument without quoting the Bible. It's not a trump card.

I believe in Nature. I believe in survival of the fittest. I believe that I have to be better today than I was yesterday at everything I try.

Everything else, I couldn't care less what created it or what influences it.

If there is a God/afterlife, awesome. It's not affecting me now. I'm not saying there is or isn't. Just that it doesn't affect any of my daily decisions.

This is why...

LINK

There are a ton of people who believe in all sorts of crazy shite that I could not care less about. I have to engage this topic because it's forced on me by people who refuse to keep their beliefs to themselves and feel the need to have others believe as well. This is not exclusive to Christians, though it's clearly the biggest issue in America. Islam, while a far greater threat, is just not as big a deal or discussed are hotly here because I'm not inundated daily by Muslims trying to force their religious beliefs into the public school classroom or force me to have to NOT take part is some Muslim prayer at a non religious school function, etc.

And this is why I'm forced to engage...because you can't NOT engage me first.
