There's been quite alot of research(that you can look up) done on teens & alcohol that dispels alot the myths that are in this thread.

"Teenagers are gonna drink anyway"

"Its ok as long as they aren't driving"

"Responsible drinking must be taught"

"Europeans don't have the problems we do with alcohol"

I'm not really into telling people how to raise their kids, but imo it's irresponsible to encourage drinking & supply alcohol to teenagers.

I thought MADD's influence had been on the decline before reading this now I am not so sure.

Nope . They can drink when they can purchase it themselves. Our they can hide it from me like we did from our parents. Same with tattoos and piercings.

I will allow my kids to try my alcohol if they are curious. They've had sips of beer, wine, and champagne when we were on vacation as early as 6 (beer earlier thanks to grandpa). Alcohol isn't taboo in our household but it isn't a big part either. Sometimes we have a drink when we're out to dinner, sometimes not. We might have wine or beer when friends are over but not always. When we are at friends' houses sometimes we drink and sometimes not. We model that alcohol isn't bad but you can also have a good time without it. They ask questions about alcohol and we and answer them truthfully.

However my line is I will not buy them their *own* alcohol. They can have a sip of my drink here and there and when they are late teens maybe they can have a glass of what I am having at home but I'm not going to supply it for them going out or serve it up when I'm not having any.

I also will not serve it to a kid that is not my own. Even if I have permission from their parent. Just not a line I want to cross.

Legal age to drink in Germany is 16 and it seems to work fine for them.

There is a massive difference between understanding your teen will experiment and offering beer to kids.

my older boys who are 18 (almost 19) and 17 (almost 18) only drink at home with husband and i. We may order a drink out and let them have a few sips.

I do not buy alcohol for them to bring elsewhere. My oldest (21) does not either.

I do not give alcohol to their friends. Simple as that. Whether or not they become alcoholics later is something we will have to wait and see. Unfortunately it’s in their genes.

So your kids drink at the house and you readily admit they are genetically predisposed to having an issue with it and it's something that well just have to wait and see but attacking people for saying that's probably not the wisest parenting move. But hey they aren't a pussy and have one of them good outside jobs. Lord. Maybe I've just been around waaaaaaay too many addicts over the years but I wouldn't wish it on anyone and think the dismissive attitude you show towards the risks indicates poor parenting from you at the very least.

How come people always assume when you drink/drive you’re going to kill 20 people and yourself? Some people are completely over the top.
