It's all about the money. If you're not going to pay someone, you have to give them something extra. Sometimes it's a title...sometimes adoration.

If they didn't enlist and the military didn't have enough people, the draft would have to reinstated and then all you candy=asses or your kids would have to go. So yes, you absolutely should be thankful and appreciative.
