Do Vehicles Still Backfire?

There was a brush fire at the Marine base in Quantico, Virginia, yesterday, and the base was locked down for a few hours. Some witnesses reported hearing gunfire (not near a firing range!), but authorities dismissed those reports, saying the witnesses likely heard vehicles backfiring.

COBB AccessPort and "snap, crackle and pop" tune then you're golden if that is your thing.

Not a common issue anymore with the advent of fuel injection. Could still occur from faulty injectors or bad O2 sensors.

Near a marine base I would guess it was a mustang or charger with some loud exhaust and a tune.
