Alzheimer’s is like a shotgun to the brain in my experience. Those memories may be there but buckshot has passed through them.
Though gruesome sounding, that’s actually a great analogy of the effects of Alzheimer’s. The entire brain is affected by the disease.

Considering dementia is worse at night aka “sundowners”, most dementia related patients do not sleep well so I doubt they are experiencing much REM sleep

Having Alzheimer’s must be pretty cool. Everybody you meet is like meeting them for the first time so you make a lot of new friends. Everybody place you go is a new adventure!

I know that's supposed to be a joke but it couldn't be further from the truth. It's like everything, even familiar people and places, is confusing and scary.

my dad died with it, it was painful, the doc told us that almost until the end, even though the mind was shot, he could still understand what was being said, he just couldn't process and respond, it wads pretty sad

My mom lived for about 7 years with a Parkinson's diagnosis. One of the many symptoms of Parkinson's is REM sleep behavior disorder where the muscles don't get paralyzed during REM sleep leading to acting out dreams or yelling/screaming/moaning. She seemed to sleep through it but I think it impacted the quality of her sleep because she often napped in her chair during the day. This then meant that by sleeping sitting up her brain wasn't flushing toxins as much as sleeping laying down, so it was all a viscous cycle.

Having dealt with it up close, I won't put myself through that. I have my exit strategy planned
I’ve watched it on both sides of my family. I’m 100% of the mindset that they are able to understand what’s going on around them, but are unable to communicate appropriately. Basically trapped inside their mind.
Much like yourself, I’ve already told my wife, that’s not how I will go.

I had a vivid dream last night about something during high school of which I had little more than a fading memory of before the dream.
How do you know it really happened and your imagination didn't create the details as a false memory?
