My son got one when he was 8 and drove it like crazy for years at our property in the country. He finally outgrew it and passed it to his sister and got a four wheeler. She still drives it though she has gotten way too tall. Neither likes the golf cart…too slow.

Need to shoot a drop or 2 of oil in the clutch keyway. Fixed that on ours back in the day.

Go karts made a man out of you. Nothing like riding with someone who takes sharp corners, you fall out and get ran over with the back tire
They would rattle your fillings out as well.

One of the best go-karts ever sold in the U.S. was the Simplex Challenger made by Simplex Manufacturing in New Orleans.
Offered with twin engine mounts for two West Bend or two McCullough engines.
It was no toy !!!

Not to mention shooting your Red Ryder at the same time.
You could lose your eye!

Their dads are getting them souped up ones now days. Giant 4 wheeler mud buggies. Those things look like a $50,000 bill passing.

Mid 70's At 10 years old, my Dad took my across the river to Port Allen where a guy sold them from in front of his service station. Paid $325 for a brand new one with a 5 HP Briggs and Stratton.
It was a lot of money back then and if I remember correctly, the guy built them from scratch. That thing was indestructible. Well, until we put aviation gas in it while riding on a relatives farm one thanksgiving. Top speed went from 25 mph to 35 mph. For about 20 mins. I still have a small burn scar on right wrist from reaching back to override the governor.
They were almost impossible to flip with the small tires but that was offset by the fact you could not be seen by someone in a car. And the fact you could run up under a house and break off the hose pipe.

I bought my son a fancy go kart when he was young, he's 20 now. Full suspension, electric start, nothing like my thunderkart I had as a kid. The worst thing I remember as a kid was when I'd hit a tall red ant mound on that low, flat thunderkart. Next thing you knew you were covered in ants. It would plow the pile in half.

I had the exact one. We played a game where the goal was to try to toss the passenger out.

Yeah, a few still ride them but the majority of kids I see have graduated to golf carts and 4 wheelers.

Do kids still ride go karts?
Yes. I know grown men that spend a significant portion of their paychecks so their kids can travel and race them.

frick yeah. We would've got along as kids and our dads would've drank beer together.

Told kids I gotta see straight A's for one semester(middle school) if they wanted a go cart. I forgot about it. Months later walked in house after work, wife said you are going to buy a go cart today!

we had one of these, with the MS101 2 cycle.
that thing would scream, and ring your ears too.
good times
then built one one for my kids, yard cart chassis, super tuned the 5hp briggs, that would turn 3000 rpm

I used to love to go to stay with my cousins who had a go kart and rode that all over the neighborhood. Do kids still ride them because I don’t really see them compared to back in the day.
I would bet that if a kid did express an interest in a go-cart the parents would one of 2 routes. The most likely is tell the kid they would die if they even thought about riding a go cart and terrifying the kid or the parents would be all in on the idea and within a year would have gone into tens of thousands of dollars of debt or more getting their kid equipped to go-cart competitvely...in the same vein as travle ball parents. The kid would have fricking ball with a 5 HP go-cart like the one shown and would become a passable mechanic if left to their own devices with the thing but parents today ain't gonna leave kids to their own devices, they are going to be there hovering over them even when they are taking a dump and jerking off...

Still at my parents but it’s in a pile of crap my dad hordes
Now it’s atv’s or side x sides
I have an uncle just a few months older than me and he and I became passable shade tree mechanics building go-carts and keeping them and mini bikes running. We had a two seater one summer that had to be put on a block to crank because it had no throttle or a clucth that worked LOL....when it fired up it was running as hard as it would go and the tire was spinning. It also did not have any brakes. One of us would be behind the wheel and the other would pull the rope. When it would start the one pulling the rope would jump in the passenger side while also pushing the thing off the block. Many's the time that the only ride the passenger got was however long they could hold on as that thing dragged them face down in the dirt at the speed of sound (probably more like 10 MPH but speed is hard to judge when you're in the process of a full body exfoliation via gravel and sand). My grandfather and father and uncles would watch us do this by the way...and their only interaction was to laugh like hell and encourage us to do it again LOL. If a parent allowed kids to behave like that today the state would take the kids away and lock the parents up...

Yes. My in laws own an arcade/go kart/ laser tag/ bowling place in south Florida and the line for go karts is usually close to an hour on weekends. One or two kids in my neighborhood have them.

I saw a kid (around 10) zipping up and down his driveway on a little electric go cart a few days ago. It was only 50 feet or so, so I don't know if that was long enough to open it up.
He wouldn't take it in the street. Nerd parents, I guess.

can already hear all the neighborhood boomers whining and calling the cops if my son had one. I just bring him to K1 a lot.
Nah. The boomers are the ones that let their kids play on go karts. And stay out until the lights came on. They did t give a frick. It’s the next generation that stopped it.
Hence the thread asking if they STILL ride go karts. Boomers were fine with it. The next generation pays for K1
