Then you have a horrible diet. I went a year off of my meds and my A1C was 9.8. Years ago it was higher like yours. It's gotten to the point to where it caused health issues so I'm very strict about my meds now. My diet has improved a lot but I still have work to do. I'm expecting my next A1C to be at or below 8. Under 7 is my ultimate goal. Get your numbers in order or you're in for a myriad of health issues. Whatever you're eating, it isn't worth it in the long run.
I do drink beer but I stick to the very low carb beers. I try to limit it to a couple of weeks a couple times a week but there are times (tailgating and gameday) when I consume a lot more.
I love good red wine. I should replace the beer with a glass or two of wine.

Alcohol is alcohol, dipshit.
Not really. Volume to get the same amount of alcohol? 12 oz. beer/ 5oz. Wine/ 1-2oz. Liquor.
Sure ethanol is eventually gonna process as a sugar, but with a beer you are choking down a lot of sugar just to get to that ethanol.
So you when you talk carbs, a shitty beer has a hundred calories and 10-15 carbs? Start drinking good beers and actual move up to pints (16 oz) or sports bar drafts go from 22-36 oz. That’s a lot of carbs.
What’s a vodka and tonic have? Even a crown and coke. A standard drink served in a rocks glass is what? 3 or 4 oz of soda to the ounce of liquor.
