My older sister's boyfriend (now husband) father used to collect cars back then. He used to come pick her up in a different car every day. Most were old Packards and Cadillacs (16 cylinders) convertables, and cars like that, and he would take us riding in them. You could play basketball in the space between the front and back seats.
The car I remember most was a Chrysler Ghia. It was a one off show car back before Chrysler would hang on to them. It was a sports coupe that must have had a hemi in it. It was fast, and the speedo went to 200 (unheard of back then) but you couldn't open it up all the way or the wheels would fly off.
Chrysler tried to buy it back from him but he wanted one of the turbine cars in trade. They said no.

I had a 1968 Roadrunner with a freakishly strong 383. Had a 120 straight line speedometer and I could bury it (take it past the 120 until the needle would disappear.
Sadly, the car ended up in some scrapyard.

When cars were awesome.
Most of my favorite cars were built from '63 to '73.
Having said that, none of them were near as fast as the modern equivalents. Cornering and braking in musclecars were non-existent.
But I've spent countless hours under the hood of several and loved most every minute of it.

When I was a kid in the 1970's we had a term -BADASS-that was said unironically and that had a very specific meaning. That guy is a badass. It did not mean a lowlife who tried too hard . It meant a working class white guy who drove a badass car. An SS or a Mustang, something like that. He had an eight track in his car and he listened to Nazareth's "Hair of the dog" or Rush "2112". He wore t-shirts (usually with a pack of Marlboros rolled up on his sleeve), had long hair and had a beautiful girlfriend who always wore a tube top and tight bell-bottom jeans. At night he'd hang a light on his hood and work on his car, drink beer and listen to Frampton Comes Alive. My neighborhood had about three of these guys and from my ten year old eyes, it looked awesome.

Got my BS in Chemical Engineering in 65 and bought a 65 Mustang.

A neighbor had a 65 GTO with three two barrel carburetors (Three deuces)! Guy bought it and was fixing it up around 75. Body wasn't in very good condition but it had that customized engine. Had seen it sitting under his garage for months. One day I was walking back from football practice and he asked me if I'd help him push it off.
When he popped the clutch, and it cranked, it kind of scared me. He was running it with open headers. No mufflers whatsoever! It was really rumbling. I rode around town with him to charge the battery back up.
His was like this one, except it was blue.
Here's a 66 with the same engine setup going down the road.
