I got an offer for a job as a diesel mechanic for one of the big garbage companies in BR. Is it as bad as it sounds? Or should I take the job? Money is going to be nice

If the job is for Republic Services I hope you take the job, sabotage their trucks, and make them have to file for bankruptcy.

Is it a shift work type of deal? The one's around my place work days and nights. The pay seems awesome, but not enough for me. Something about chasing down a hydraulic leak on a garbage truck just doesn't sound that great.

I figure you just spray the crap out of them with a big hose before you start. Other than that I can't imagine it's any better or worse than other diesel mechanic work.

Yea, sounds like the deals up here. Seems like good money at first glance, but a lot of downsides. When the trucks don't run on due to a holiday... that's a prime time to get maintenance caught up.

Years ago they were offerin somewhere around 22-25 per hour. But it said "must be able to work in confined spaces". I didn't want to even imagine what that situation would be like.

I used to inspect fire extinguishers on garbage trucks. If you can get past the smell then it’s like every other job.

Hope this is a bad pun because a man trying to get a job is admirable nowadays. I wish the OP luck and I hope he is able to provide for his family.

They wash the trucks at the landfill before they come to the shop

Man, it’s nothing that won’t wash off, at least in respects to other diesel mechanic work. If the bump in pay is worthwhile along with dealing with the 2nd shift, go for it.

If you've ever worked on anything underneath a class 8 truck, this is usually the case

I wouldn’t say it would be bad working on the engines....the hydraulic system would be another story...

Working on the "front" engine, transmixer wouldn't be too bad i'd guess. Working on them hydraulics in the rear would be nightmarish baw. And that shite leaks hyd oil all the time, at least on my street it does. The upside is you'd likely be impervious to COVID one niner after a few months though.

I wouldn't be working on the hydraulics, at least for now. Oil changes and tire changes for the most part.

Might be a great place to cut your teeth. Good luck with it. One thing for sure is that you'll always have a job as a tech.

Whomever the company is, I would check to see when they have to rebid their contract. If they don't win, you may be out of a job (at least temporarily).
