When it comes to grisly discoveries in the sewer, even finding the alligators of urban myth could be preferable to finding a fatberg.

The blockages are known as fatbergs because they are composed of wet wipes that have been flushed down the toilet, mixed with sewage, fat, and oil.

The 750-kilogram blockage, composed mainly of used wet wipes, was pulled from the sewer system in Eleebana, Australia on Wednesday. It took a crane to remove it. “The rest of the fatberg, 300 kilograms, was removed by hand, one bucket at a time,”

What a shitty job

I always feel dubious if the "flush able wipes" really do dissolve. I know regular baby wipes wont.

Has anybody tested if they do?

A lot of times these “news” people will use measurements that we aren’t used to so the number sounds bigger. I’m always suspicious when they don’t use something I’m familiar with and use daily.

They have, and they don't.

This fatberg thing was a storyline on this past Tuesday's season finale of Younger, a 30 min. chick-flickish show on Prime. My guess is fatboydave watched this episode too and was blown away by the fatberg thing but didn't want to admit to watching such a gay show. Instead, he found a 2 year old story about fatbergs.

I don't mind admitting I watch gay shows.

Yep. I guarantee they're costing your municipality a lot in extra costs. Either in manpower and equipment for significantly increased maintenance or capital costs for new infrastructure at the headworks of the treatment plant.

About a 1653#, partially synthetic turd.

Better bring the dually with the big truck nuts.

I remember an article about these in New York City sewers. They get packed in and become as hard as concrete. Decades of build-up.

We need to get Ed Norton to solve this.

Correction: It was in London, not NYC. It appears that it is a common British and Australian thing

I’d rather pass the cost on to the S&WB and my neighbors than to my turd cutter.

The wipes just say "flushable" and that is exactly what you did. They need to be biodegradable
