Did anyone else live on the cruiseships in NOLA after Katrina

The Ecstasy and the Sensation were dock at the riverfront for "essential personnel". That means cops, firefighters, first responders, essential city personnel, doctors, nurses, fema workers, Homeland security and such.
They stayed 6 months and had housing for about 6000 or more ( I think).
I know we all give cruise ships a hard time on how they are but in this situation they were amazing. An instant floating city berth in a literal pit of misery.

Oh they got paid handsomely indeed. They basically had to gut the ships after to do a total makeover but the ships needed that anyway due to the decor.
The staff were great. They were so kind and helpful. Many of them stayed the whole 6 months. They became family to us.
So yeah, it wasnt like Carnival donated the ships but by having those ships for us to rent they helped the city a lot.

My FEMA trailer for Mardi Gras 2006 was a fricking blast.

My fiance had been sleeping on the concrete floor of the firehouse before we got on the ship.
This was not a walmart type cruise. These were people whose lives and homes were devastated and everyone was so kind and sharing.
They fed us just as if we were on a cruise. The food was amazing and they even baked cookies everyday for the kids coming home from school.

My FIL and MIL did. FIL worked in the HQ for the Fire Dept.
