pretty much any other degree is a sucker's bet as getting a PTECH degree and becoming an operator or getting a trade and working for a contractor will out-pay most any college degree for a long time
No
Contrary to popular OT belief there are other careers that pay as well as engineering.
To the OP my wife has this feeling a lot, but she's in year 6 of an 8 year college education. I always tell her that we'll be better off in the end, because it's true. Just look to the future, and know you'll be better off in the end of you finish your education.

Notice I said "In South Louisiana". That clearly would not be the case in most other places. We live in a unique region where the tradesman and the blue collar worker out earn the college educated relative to other places. This simply isn't the case anywhere else, but it kinda is here.

The comparison of an operator's pay to an engineer's pay is about equal in most plants. That is after you figure in OT, shift differential for working nights, double time and a half on holidays, etc.
The thing that engineers avoid is shift work. They work regular hours. They also don't have to come in to fill in for some loser who called in bc he had the sniffles. They avoid all of that.

While mostly true, engineering isn't the only field that can out earn these blue collar jobs. Many healthcare jobs out earn engineers.

Yes they do, but Obamacare is really straining that market, plus they have the extra 4 years of med/nursing school plus internship, residency, ect. PTECH baws skip straight to "attending" money and stay that way forever, where as doctors wait 10 years to get to "attending" money and surpass it after a few years. Doctors pass up engineers and operators, but it takes a while and requires a greater investment up front in time and money.

If you make 150k working 80 hours a week, versus someone making 150k working 40 hours a week, your pay isn't equal

I'm not only talking about physicians, pharmacists (among others) can out earn engineers and only go to school for 2 more years. There are other non-provider careers in healthcare (management, IS, etc) that can also out earn engineers.
I wasn't really comparing these jobs to operators, but rather challenging the fact that engineers are the only career path that can lead to money in south Louisiana.

150k = 150k
Engineers work more than 40 hour work weeks. Hate to break the news to you Chem engineering students, but you're gonna be on call some weekends and will have to participate with us lowly operators on turnarounds. It's not like you show up to the plant and frick off with your feet up on the desk M-F. They just don't have to work nights and most weekends.

No. Just no. Are you really trying to claim the average engineer will have to work as many hours as an operator to make $150k?

Yeah really.
I hate when the engineers are around.

frick yea I feel stuck.
Going on 7 years of school in 8 years since I left high school.
Eta: but I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it's approaching rapidly.
Still have to finish an MBA in a few years, but that's another story.

I disagree, if you're making half of the hourly wage it isn't equal. Also, I'm not even in a field remotely close to this, so the work schedules of engineers is no consequence to me.
Posted on 2/24/15 at 8:34 am to RealityTiger
I did. Are you claiming they work an equal number of hours to make $150k?
Posted on 2/24/15 at 8:35 am to Epic Cajun
Money is money. The schedule is better for engineers. For the third fricking time...
