Detroit Schools to Continue $100 Weekly Perfect Attendance Payments

Detroit Public Schools Community District is expanding an attendance incentive that officials say helped improve turnout among high school students.
Students in grades 6 through 8 can earn $50 for each week of perfect attendance, while high school students can still earn $100 a week.
The expansion comes as chronic absenteeism remains widespread. In 2024-25, 61% of district students missed at least 10% of the school year.
There will also be a new ride-share pilot program. The $500,000 rideshare pilot will provide trips to about 150 students at Pershing, Denby, Osborn and East English Village high schools from Aug. 24 through mid-October.
A separate $1 million state grant will keep DDOT bus rides free for all Detroit K-12 students.

Looks like the Detroit public school system is in line for some budget cuts…

Honestly may be worth it. Sad it's come to this, but truancy is a horrible issue and our country is seemingly just getting dumber.

They are still not learning shite.
And now the kids who actually were going and trying to learn have to deal with them. fricking crazy.

I'm torn. It's tough to get HSers to give a shite about coming in, especially when its not reinforced at home.
At the same time, parents will 100% send their bad arse kids in sick as frick to get the money.

Truancy isn’t causing “dumb”.
There’s a common cause that results both in truancy and “dumb”.
Until they figure out a treatment for the cause they are just throwing money away.
Although- keeping these fine yoots from terrorizing the general public from 8am-3pm is probably worth something.

I did not think of this
That's true.

This is part of the benefit. When they're not in school, they're getting involved in all kinds of bad shite.
I agree it starts at the home.
I wouldn't be happy if my tax payer dollars went to this, but it's not my city, so I'm curious to see if it works

36-40 week school year x $100. They're paying these kids almost $4,000 a year.
Fail 10th grade indefinitely - more money than welfare.

Now, make it a performance or even a behavior incentive and although I think it is dumb, I can at least understand. But simply showing up and being the sane shithead you are in the streets? No

It should be a $100 a week tax writeoff for parents
Not hard cash

Mom is gonna force the kid to school to get her 100 bucks, the kid is gonna disrupt, and still hit the streets at 3.

Just send them to military academies. Bribing kids to do what is right does not reinforce positive behavior. Sleeping in bunks with 100 other kids and running 5 miles @ 0500 will.

I have zero problem with this.
It’s a new approach, and these kids need all the care and opportunity they can get.
Ain’t there fault there were born to shite parents in a shitty area.
