can jump high lol
When I got my dachshund, I had no idea they could jump as high as they do. Left a whole pizza on the counter shortly after I got her...ran out for a minute and came home to 1/2 of it gone. Laid on her back in agony for about three days.

We have two miniatures that are a year old. First inside dogs I've ever had and I love them like kids.
One is laid back, loves everyone and is like a big pot head.
The other is nervous, hates strangers and is a yapper.

Our daschund is very friendly and gentle. He's also dumb as a fence post, bossy and jealous -- he never barks at people when we go on walks, but he barks his arse off when he wants to get on the sofa or off the bed.
And I'll echo the comments about not letting daschunds jump off of high things and keeping their weight down. That's tough, because they like to eat and they're sedentary.

Depends on the dog.. I have two and they jump up and down from the sofa all the time... No problems so far... However my male[brutus] who is supposed to be a mini is more like a hog. I have never seen a small dog eat so much.......

I have 2 longhairs, both in the mini to average size.
<<<<<< Gus is my Avatar pic.
I will echo what most have said. I LOVE my 2 dachshunds. Both go up and down the back porch stairs with no problems. I make sure I keep their weight in check.
Dachshunds are the most stubborn dogs, and have one track minds. Mine were difficult to housetrain, and will still go in the house on occasion.
But they have huge personalities and are loving, sweet pups. I will always have a dachshund.

Thanks so much to all for the info. I just adore this little dog. My husband says he is a mama's boy. Thought about a name change to Ignatius! Oh those eyes, he really knows how to play them. I do think he is afraid of the steps or maybe they don't look right to him, so we carry him down. He has no problem "rocketing" up the steps though.

He's still a pup, so you're probably right. He probably has no idea how to get down them. Practice is the only thing that will help that.

Ours did the same thing. You can teach him there's nothing to be afraid of by pretty much placing his paws on the steps for him and letting him figure it out from there. He'll either stay there terrified or slinky on down like ours did

Yep. If you know your dog well, you can read them by their eyes. Dachshund's eyes give them away every time.
Teach him how to go down the steps, or he will make you carry him down every time. These little buggers know how to take advantage of a situation.
Ignatius is a great name.

Our daschund's name is Riley. His full name is Ignatius J. Riley Esquire.
Here's a recent photo. He was coming back from the vet. Poor boy had allergies and was sneezing up a storm

Haha they have the most innocent looking faces.

Daschunds were bred as badger dogs, with the ability and build to go down into their lairs (holes) after them.
Have had them in the past. Really neat breed.

Gracie Lou. She was just chillin' out watching us clean toys in sun room.
Parents have a dapple male named Gus.
Brother has a black male Chaweinie named Reggie Bush.

Just too cute. Our Doxie mix is black with a white patch on his chest and chin.

Ignacius J Riley! That's the name!!! A real mama's boy. We will just keep it as Don Juan DeMarco.

Another question about Daschunds. How many here have Daschunds with an overbite? Even though ours is a mix, I am wondering if this is a common thing. Our vet pointed it out but said it was slight.

We have same mix of dog and he does fine. Send him my way if you can't handle it. We love ours.
