Cylinder Deactivation Feature Canceled in GM trucks due to Chip Shortage

Surprised the EPA will let them do this without getting the fuel mileage re-certified.
Costly fuel saving tech that most of you didn't even want will now not be included on new GM trucks until further notice. Win-Win....unless you work for the EPA.

GM builds pickups without certain modules due to global chip shortage, hurting fuel economy

General Motors Co said on Monday that due to the global semiconductor chip shortage the U.S. automaker is building certain 2021 light-duty full-size pickup trucks without a fuel management module, hurting those vehicles’ fuel economy performance.
The lack of the active fuel management/dynamic fuel management module means affected models, equipped with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine with both six-speed and eight-speed automatic transmission, will have lower fuel economy by one mile per gallon, spokeswoman Michelle Malcho said.
Malcho emphasized all trucks are still being built, something GM has repeatedly stressed it would try to protect as pickups are among GM’s most profitable models. She declined to say the volume of vehicles affected.
“By taking this measure, we are better able to meet the strong customer and dealer demand for our full-size trucks as the industry continues to rebound and strengthen,” Malcho wrote in an email.
The change runs through the 2021 model year, which typically ends in late summer or early fall, she said.
Malcho said it would not have a major impact on the Detroit automaker’s U.S. corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) numbers.
“We routinely monitor our fleet for compliance in the U.S. and Canada, and we balance our portfolio in a way that enables us to manage unforeseeable circumstances like this without compromising our overall (greenhouse gas) and fuel economy compliance,” she said.
GM’s fleetwide fuel economy in the 2018 model year was 22.5 miles per gallon and was projected to rise to 22.8 mpg for 2019, according to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency.
To meet federal CAFE requirements, automakers like GM often use credits from either earlier years where they faced less stringent rules and performed better than the requirements or buy credits from other automakers.

And these engines will last forever.

They definitely will now that it's just a standard V8.
Honda, GM and now Ford have all had issues with this technology. GM got a lot better in the past few years, but they still see more oil consumption than what they should.

The customers buying these trucks will be happier for it.
They will be able to get 300,000+ miles out of these things easily.

GM has had a lot of parts availability issues, it has been killing the number of C8 Corvettes they have been able to produce.

Damn, all I need to do now is find some ethanol-free gas and that motor should run forever.

So many Chevy and GMC pickup owners (along with Honda 3.5L V6 owners) spend about $1,000 to delete this feature after their warranties run out. Customers aren't demanding this feature.
It's being forced on them just like E-20 gasoline.

Well they might as well get a better engine since their transmissions are hot garbage. I’ve been a GM fanboy for years, but I’m just about
Done with them.
I’d love not to have the cylinder BS on my truck. Just put a V8 in it and let me worry about fuel economy.

The GM 5.3L V8 or 6.2L V8 engine paired to the 10 speed should be pretty close to bulletproof now.
I'd definitely get the GM truck over the competitors now; especially considering that Ford is experimenting with this technology in their new 5.0L V8 engines starting in 2021.

Their 8 speeds had issues, but their 6 and 10 speeds are damn good.

Allison in the big trucks. Half ton runs whatever POS tranny was in mine.
Loved my Duramax 3500. Should’ve never gotten rid of it.

Whatever was in my 17 Silverado is junk. Like the truck other than that, but the transmission problem really frosted my nuts.

sad, older GM transmissions were the shite. The 700r4 and 4L60e were tough.

I did not wait for my warranty to run out. I waited for the AFM to frick up sticking two lifters on the passenger side before I disabled that shite.
The difference in driveability since is night and day. This is the way these trucks should come from the factory.

They had 8 speed autos that had a lot of issues. Their other gearboxes are very good.

I wish they'd stop using all of those plastic chin spoilers and weird aerodynamic light units too.

It’s not just chips. I need some 2032 button batteries and they’re sold out everywhere.
