It's crazy to think that the one in 2004 in Thailand, India etc killed 280,000.

All those videos of idiot tourists playing in the receded ocean as it approached.

Then when we found out what had just happened my only thought was this better not effect my orders leaving this island the following month.

I bet your empathy has clothed, sheltered and fed so many unfortunate victims.

Infinitely more than your callous disregard has

You seem insecure. Let me know if you want to talk it out. I have no problem with charity and am happy to help the less fortunate like yourself

Japan is a much more developed country and had significantly better early warning systems in place

This and large areas hit by the 2004 tsunami are barely above sea level so the waters swept much father inland. The water covered every inch of the Maldives leaving no high ground to run to and the Maldives didn't even get hit by the waves that slammmed Indonesia and Thailand. 20 islands in total were completely submerged.

92.5% died by drowning. Victims aged 60 or older accounted for 65.2% of the deaths, with 24% of total victims being in their 70s.[189] As of March 2012, Japanese police data showed that 70% of the 3,279 still missing were aged 60 or over, all found, including 893 in their 70s and 577 in their 80s. Of the total confirmed victims, 14,308 drowned, 667 were crushed to death or died from internal injuries, and 145 perished from burns.

I'd hate to be stuck on a building that's being washed away and be burnt up in those fires

I know its hindsight, but i would be running to higher ground once i heard those sirens instead of staying back and witnessing the rushing waters...ive seen a few in that vid who either didnt take it seriously by staying around when they had enough time retreat or didnt react fast enough especially those in vehicles....turn the frick around and dont worry about the speed limit

I was thinking the same thing watch that clip. That wall of water is coming and so many cars are driving by seemingly parallel. At what point do you say, "F this road, I'm driving away from this shite!"

But again, I don't know the surroundings. That may have been their best bet. I get lost in wondering if they got away.

I still remember watching the footage that morning and the water was carrying debris that was on fire. It was just crazy.
