Charter sucks major balls, and ATT isn't too far behind.

Impossible. Comcast is the worst, followed closely by Charter.

hook your cable up directly to your TV. See if you have basic digital feed. IF (big if these days) your TV has a TV tuner built in, it will have the non-HD cable channel in it's normal spot, and the HD feed starting with a "7".
