re: Could you last one 5-minute round with a fly weight UFC fighter?

I'll jump in here. I'm a brown belt in BJJ, wrestled since high school (although, just barely average...at best) and have been training in MMA for nearly a decade now. I'm good friends w/ and trained a lot w/ Tom Lawlor (submission of the night, UFC 100)and Seth Petruzelli (knocked out Kimbo).
They could both beat the shite out of me in less than 3 minutes. Now, they are both bigger than me, but their instincts, balance, strength and cardio (god damn that cardio)are on another level entirely.
That being said, It depends on the type of flyweight. An elite striker would probably be my worst match-up. I give myself 3 minutes if I'm not able to clinch or get it to the ground.
If the guy is a grappler, I'd have a chance. But realistically, I give myself 4 minutes before I gas or get my eyebrow sliced wide open from one of their bony elbows.

I wouldn't try to spar. I would let them take me down. If they won't, walk around the ring.
If I got full mount just sit up or lay dead weight style on top while controlling their wrist.
If I got half mount, drive forward and place their shoulder and head to the ground and lift mid section.
If under, their legs could not wrap up enough not get out by pushing off the hips and crab walk.
This is the dumbest thing I've read

Because you can't do any of those things from those positions or any other to a trained grappler much less a UFC caliber fighter
I have an amateur 135er here in Baton Rouge if anyone wants to take a shot.
I know he isn't a 125er, but he is close and he is merely an amateur Mma fighter. Certainly not UFC caliber

I do not admit that I could win or try anything to win. Bjj was designed on leverage. If I take away leverage by reducing space between I can effectively defend for a long enough time. Again I am not saying I would win.

It isn't just a BJJ match. Punches and elbows will make you give up your position in a heartbeat. High level grapplers don't just "give up space" either.
HFP, have you done this stuff before?

You really should go roll with Beezy's 135er

Yes. I had some training with bjj and judo. I did tae Kwon do a few years in high school. I have a friend that was on ultimate fighter that I sparred with a few times. Jeremiah riggs.
I will not say that I trained enough in any of these to win a match with anybody. But I did learn enough to defend enough.

Most bjj classes were taught with defense in mind and wait for an opportunity.

And you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night

Let's get a time scheduled. I'd really like to see this.

Yikes.
We have a saying in our class; "The easiest way to pass someone's guard is by punching them in the face". Have you ever noticed that pure BJJ guys don't win anymore in the UFC?
For the most part, guys don't wait around for people to make mistakes anymore. They create opportunity by creating space. They are professionals at taking away the very advantage you think you'd have.
Also, if you do TKD, you're probably not used to getting shins buried in your thigh. That will make an untrained person drop their hands every single time.

Id like to know what some of you trained fighters, particularly kbeezy, think about one of these flyweights against a 240 pound professional athlete. Could the athlete last 5 min?

And your "teachers" probably laughed all the way to the bank when they showed you that "half mount."

Most people react completely wrong to getting hit. So, if the athlete hasn't done any kind of training in the sport, then he probably wouldn't.
I haven't met an inexperienced person yet who doesn't drop their hands when kicked in the leg or moves their leg away from a kick instead of checking it.
If the fight somehow goes to the ground, chances are they will get guillotined on the way to the ground.
Obviously, it would be a tougher road to hoe w/ a 240 lb pro athlete, but knowledge is everything in MMA and not having it is a killer.
