It has reached me relevantly. Family and friends that aren’t Fortunate enough to work from home or work in a hospital are being put out of work for a month in Louisiana thanks to idiots.

CDC puts out first set of US data. We have basically gathered this info ourselves by following the cases but here is their first US report. And yes our calculations are far from ideal given that we basically just test sick people.
“This first preliminary description of outcomes among patients with COVID-19 in the United States indicates that fatality was highest in persons aged =85, ranging from 10% to 27%, followed by 3% to 11% among persons aged 65–84 years, 1% to 3% among persons aged 55-64 years, <1% among persons aged 20–54 years, and no fatalities among persons aged =19 years.”

Ultimately either you have to commit to these suppression/social distancing strategies until a viable solution such as a vaccine, effective antiviral treatments emerge ( a la 18+ months) or herd immunity begins to take effect. Otherwise you're likely just going to delay/push the peak later if you relax your guidelines. Obviously this will decimate the economy on a global scale.
Intermittent mitigation strategies may "flatten" the curve, but the peaks within the flattened curve may still overwhelm ICU/hospital resources multiple times over duration of the disease spread.
Or you can do nothing, suffer the catastrophic overwhelming of healthcare resources and collateral deaths secondary to that, but herd immunity takes over and we begin to rebuild.
There's no perfect solution for this. The paper advocates for suppression until herd immunity/vaccines kick in despite it's financial/economic situation.
It's lose-lose overall.
In some ways, I feel like we are attempting to protect one sector(healthcare) at the expense of decimating all other sectors for a prolonged period of time.

I mean I get it. I have been taking the thing serious even before this news. I haven’t left the house aside from going to work.
I informed my employer and suggested that I quarantine. They don’t find it necessary for whatever reason and they seemed to think I was insane for even suggesting it without having direct contact.
I’m not going to argue with them about it. I think they are wrong, but what can I do? Not many options.

Good grief, implement some of Herschel Walker's workout routine. Dude didn't touch a weight until well into pro ball and was jacked out of his mind. It'll hold you over for a few weeks until the gyms open back up. You can probably even wear your flat bill hat and string tank top while you do it!

The presumption that its not potentially beneficial to give the country etc 6-8 months of planning and mitigation vs letting the thing just blow the frick up right now is PROPOSTEROUS.
Not sure how to look at it any other way.
If you let the black line scenario happen, that's legit no recovery. At least the other two give us time to put everything towards vaccines, beds etc etc.
