The response can be faster if they are needed, traffic flows better, bad guys are deterred, low-paid public servant gets a boost

Let the people that risk their health and lives use the dang car.

So when a sheriff uses his vehicle for personal use it’s against the law?

What about a police Chief?

It’s up to the department who can and who can’t take them home.

You’re still a fricking idiot

LSP takes theirs home

I know OPSD detectives take theirs home as well as NOPD detectives

Lots of depts take home their cruisers.

It’s not against the law you moron.

You said you didn’t have a problem with them taking the cars home, but it was against the law.

And you’re wrong. It’s not against the law for them to take the cars home.

I said it's against the law for then to be used for personal use, because it is, which is the thread topic.

Police officers are never off duty. If they are in a marked or unmarked vehicle they are on duty. They have a responsibility to uphold the law. They will be carrying a badge and a gun.

Now if they are outside of their jurisdiction on personal business then yes, they are breaking the rules.

They cant go grocery shopping or pick up dry cleaning or pick their kids up from school while off duty in a government owned car.

as i understand it, state cops can drive their unit anywhere, and can have passengers. but if there is an emergency, they must dump their passenger and respond.

You understand incorrectly, they can only drop off/pickup on their way to/from work. Only personal use they get is to the gym.

Mingo, the laws you cite are for Federal employee vehicles and state employee vehicles such as LSP. It does not pertain to municipalities, they are free to set their policies as they see fit dummy.

I brought this up before to someone. They raised a good point. More than likely this is due to not having enough space at the motor pool for every cop to drive their private car in everyday.

Many are on call 24/7. They have a 30 minute response time. They actually get in trouble if they arrive late.

Think about it. You are at the mall and get called out. Make it to Plank and Evangeline in 30 minutes.

Because Mingo is still a little kid, in his 20’s, wet behind the ears, balls haven’t dropped and still pissing vinegar. Doesn’t know how the real world works.
