What cops need to do, good cops that is, is call out bad cops when they see it like in this case, strive to constantly build relationships within the communities in which they live and work in to build trust, and do their job they are hired to do, and building relationships goes a long way in helping them do their jobs effectively and with more ease as people within that community trust them that they aren’t their enemy.


Right or wrong, there is a well entrenched perception that they are their enemies, and that has to change, or it will never ever get any better, and doing their jobs and cleaning up crime ridden neighborhoods will forever be an exercise in futility. If we go back to the days when cops walked a beat so to speak, and everyone in the neighborhood knew the cops in their neighborhood by name, a bond of trust was in place. Today, not so much, and the only time they encounter a cop they have no idea who he is, its often a pretty aggressive encounter, or they grow up seeing the cop decked out in paramilitary gear and are seen as an intimidating element. Rather than someone they can see as an advocate, he's seen as the adversary.

We have to change that. We don't live in a police state, and I don't think anyone actually wants us to become one either.
