True story.

I was in Finn McCool's Irish Pub on Banks St. and the young lady behind the bar "Wee Sally" asked what everybody was giving up for Lent since it was the Monday before Lent when I was there. I was sitting next to an Irishman and we were talking shop about carpentry and drinking pints of Guinness to wash down the days dust.

The first guy said "I'm giving up the "salty bits", meaning chips and salty snacks." The next guy at the bar said he was giving up fried foods. The guy next to me said he was giving up nothing.

She got to me and I said I was giving up all alcohol like I do every year for Lent. The Irishman next to me then said "AIRE Ye crazy man? For God's sake give up something else. Aire you married"?

I said I was and he went on "Then give up sex for Christ sake since you look like you've had your fair share at your age, but don't give up alcohol".

Everybody within earshot was cracking up at our exchange, and he was dead serious.

I vowed to stop lying to God by making Lent commitments I know I won’t keep.
