My question is, if he took an oath, what did it entail. Not a flame...genuinely curious.

This is from an article that I found on the subject:

quote:

Today every Officer takes an oath “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.” According to an Army oath from 1830 (Lee commissioned in 1829), the Officers of the time swore “that I will bear true allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever” (history.army.mil).

Bottom line, he did indeed break his oath. However, men like Washington broke their oath to the British Crown when they rebelled against the empire in 1775-76. The difference between the two is that Washington won and Lee lost. Had the Confederacy been able to maintain its independence, in an alternate universe Lee likely becomes its second president and becomes one of the most beloved figures in the history of North America - ranking right up there with George Washington.

too bad he broke his oath to be loyal to the united states

That’s a silly point. I usually am one defending the removal of his statues on the grounds that, while Lee was a good man, he failed the moral test of his time. However, the United States he swore an oath to was sundered.

If I’m not mistaken Lee joined the US after the defeat and continued his storied career. He was a leader.

And this is is exactly how we dumb down history into an easily packaged narrative. Heaven forbid such a crucial event and figure in our country’s history is afforded any sort of nuance.

The civil war being framed as a good guys vs bad guys situation may just be the reason that 150+ years later the south still has the lowest educational rankings, highest poverty and crime, lowest in median incomes, etc. Some may even call it oppression.
