WWII didn't just "end" like flipping off a light switch. The global order was really rearranging itself from about 1910 to 1990, when the Germans, Japanese, and Chinese Communists finally achieved meaningful control. Since then we have had a relatively easy time of bread, circuses, and decline, and it is indeed people who were born in the late 1980s who are the first among us who've never perceived the world to be in a state of profound struggle.
