Was on location here for almost a year. The only thing worse than Beaumont is Port Arthur a little further down. I don't recognize them as a part of Texas.
Along with T-Bird's suggestions, I would also add Fuego for tacos, and Black Water Draw or Hullabaloo Diner for breakfast/brunch.

My impression of College Station was that it is a decent town that is primarily consistent of the college, but it's nothing to write home about. And if you want to have fun anywhere outside of college station, good damn luck because it's surrounded by a bunch of nothing.
A friend of mine is on the city council for college station and I think he's done a great job making it more progressive and accessible to people coming into the city.
