I caught several burglars in my time as a officer. Most of them are cowards and won't hit a occupied home, but the bold ones will. I came close many times to having to shoot one, we also had a few incidents where officers did shoot one. One of my guys shot one at a school break in just as I was coming into the building to back him up.

About 6 years ago......was living on the river in Springfield. One night the lights went out while watching TV so I decided to just go to bed. So I'm in the bed sleeping when apparently the lights came on momentarily. The TV came on to some Mexicans talking and then.....BOOM......the transformer blew. Me being half asleep did not realize that it was the TV. So got pretty paranoid and screamed out.....heard nothing. I knew someone was in my house trying to get my 32 inch big screen! Heart pounding out my chest, I grab my shotgun and coleman Lantern and begin searching the house. I probably would've shot my shadow to be honest. After searching and coming up short, decided to make a pass outside. Open the door and round the house. To my surprise there's the entergy crew! I'm standing here in my boxers with crocs, a shotgun and Lantern. I can only imagine what they thought. I just eased back inside. The power came back on to the same Mexican talking shortly after. Felt like a fool and could do nothing but laugh. That's about the closest I've ever came to an intruder and turned out pablo wasn't even an intruder.

This happened to my friend.
He just moved into an apt in New Orleans. He could not sleep and he got up to get a glass of water. He looked out the window above the sink and saw two people sitting in his truck. He wiped his eyes again and yep, two guys were in his truck. So he ran outside shouting like an idiot and the two men took off running. He started running after them and eventually tackled one to the ground. He said it was a 12 year old boy and the boy immediately started crying saying "oh god! oh god!" My friend stood up and told the boy to "get out of here." He just let him go.

We had a guy stealing from the neighbors shed one day. Dad ran in threw me a shotgun plan was for him to come in from the west and flush him by me. I went to the east through the woods at a slow stalk. At the last minute dad went straight at it causing the perp to head straight north. Dad felt that if he ran him by me I would have killed him. I'd spent the last 8 months in Iraq and it was second day of a two week leave. Still though I wouldn't have killed him unless he was a threat. Sheriff picked the guy up a little later and he was not armed. Closest thing I got.

I had about 2 pounds of pressure on the trigger on my .357 aimed squarely between his eyes when he decided to do as I instructed. It only requires 3.5 pounds for my trigger to do it's job.

Pulled out of a parking lot in Nola one night and stopped at a red light. A young urban youth crossed the street in front of me. I notice he is staring right at me, but I'm trying like hell to avoid eye contact. He crosses the street and then doubles back walking toward my window. I grab my 38 and then finally look at him anticipating the stand off. He says "Hey man, turn your headlights on".

Accidentally punched in the silent distress code on the ex's alarm one night. The cops showed up half an hour later trying to open the front and back doors without announcing who they were. It was pretty intense for a good 5 mins.
Arrived home one day shortly after our alarm had gone off, but it wasn't still going off when I got there. Went in, was letting the dog, out, etc. and had just taken my pistol out and laid it on the coffee table.
While standing there, cop knocks and then immediately opens the front door, and we both freeze, he looks at the pistol then back at me. Very thankfully, this cop had processed an accident that happened in my driveway about 3 weeks earlier, and we recognized each other (he worked our neighborhood of Atlanta) from that and just generally seeing each other around since.
He let out this gigantic sigh and nearly doubled over and started laughing, and that's about how I felt too. It only lasted a couple seconds, but it was intense.
TLDR How I almost became an OT police abuse thread

I've been on both sides of this situation.
I drove down to BR for a sorority party with a chick I had never met who was friends with my buddy's gf. We got dropped off at her house afterwards around 3 a.m. and the key wasn't working on the front door so we try the back. I was fumbling around with the keys in the dark at the back door which didn't work either, a light came on inside and I looked up to see a dude pointing a pistol at me through the glass. Chick was so drunk we weren't even on the right street, the guy was cool about it when he realized what was happening.
A few years ago before I was married, I had a roommate who was going to his lake house for the weekend which was several hours away. Sometime after midnight my gf (now wife) woke me up and said someone was in the house. I could hear someone going through cabinets and drawers in the kitchen, grab my pistol and start making my way to the noises. I had it drawn and was turning the corner when I heard my drunk arse roommate answer his cell phone. He had not gone to the lake house and went out but did not tell me he was coming home. He was so drunk he didn't notice the gun, and I didn't let him know how close he came to getting shot until he had sobered up the next morning.

folks in the old days would pepper you with rock salt.
Some high school buddies of mine got rock salted in the arse and back - they were behind a house stealing their cantaloupes. Old woman yells, they run and she blasts away. It was at pretty close range and really didn't make much of a wound - but apparently it burned like hell and scared them.
Rock salt would be so light I bet it doesn't penetrate that well (which is probably the point).

Drunk BIL walked into my house around 2 in the morning. He was not expected and was very nearly shot.
Now that I am divorced I realize I should have shot his sister.....I kid

Someone was prowling in the backyard of my parents house and I went out with my sideways gat to investigate.
As I'm looking around, a cop comes from behind a wall pointing his pistol at me thinking I was the prowler. Come to find out, my mom had called the cops while I was outside unbeknownst to me

Coming home from cutting some yards when I was about 16, I noticed someone going through my dads truck parked in the street. My buddy who helped me cut, got out and searched him, he didn't have anything so I let him on his way without the arse beating he deserved.
When I took my conceal carry class, the instructor told us that if you have to shoot/kill someone to defend your life, that its going to cost roughly $10k in fees even though it was justified. Makes you think twice about pulling the trigger, but defending your life is very much worth the $10k.
