Christmas gift--embroidery machine Tell me the story about these machines

I'll buy it if I can get some threads logo'd up
The bride would like one but what am I looking at price-wise? What else does these machines do? Who wants to sell me your wife's seconds?

Yes. But you’ll need some software and a pc hooked to it and some knowledge of how to create the logos. Images can be purchased like clip art.

Mine had one, did scrapbooks and when she discovered Shutterfly books she said frick doing the scrapbook thing..

You can spend a few hundred or you can spend several thousand. Usually, they are a module you attach to a sewing machine, that come with the machine when you buy it. I think that's the way to go, so she also has the sewing machine...if she doesn't have one already.
You can also buy a dedicated embroidery machine. Most will come with designs on them, but you can buy others online and upload to the machine, or cd's, etc.
My advice is to go to a sewing machine store. They'll have the experience to help you decide what you can get for your budget, software, threads (she'll need several spools of different colors to get her started.)
Most importantly, they should offer free lessons. She'll NEED them if she hasn't done any embroidery before. If you go to Walmart, she won't have a clue and no support, and it'll sit in the closet.
If you live near an All Brands, they'll have a pretty good selection. Or there are stores everywhere that are dedicated to specific brands. Brother, Baby Lock and Bernina are the three you want to get.

Decent software is hundreds of dollars if she wants to make awesome monogram initials for Brayden, Jayden, and Aiden.
Oh and then the software is still super dated and a pain in the arse. You're looking at $1000 to get everything you need to embroider. Then she has to learn how to use it. Hooping the fabric is way freaking harder than it seems.

I'm forever breaking thread, on any machine I use. Good thread, decent machine, operator is an embroidery idiot.

Unless she knows what she's doing, start small. My wife has built a good business and she started learning on a machine that was only $300. When she was ready to really take the plunge, we dropped almost $15k on a complete professional setup.
