I assure you I haved faced similar situations while deployed. If we failed to follow procedure we would have been brought up on charges. It is not easy but when you take a high risk job you do so knowing the laws you must follow.
I hear you brother, wasn't personal and realize you have faced worse ROE abroad. In legal terms, for peace officers, there is no shooting to wound. It opens up the vultures, plaintiff attorneys, to a gold mine on every legal shoot.

What did the officer kick away from the body after he was dead?
A knife he used to slash a cops tires earlier.

The cop also has at least 18 complaints against him, many of which were excessive force.

At least 18 citizen complaints have been filed against Van Dyke in his 14-year career, but he was never disciplined, according to a University of Chicago database. Eight complaints alleged excessive force, two involving the use of a firearm in addition to the McDonald shooting.
"We don't have all of Van Dyke's complaints but the complaints of, the misconduct complaints from Van Dyke that we do have in our data tool show by and large excessive force and racial slurs. And he has largely operated with impunity and under a code of silence with the same huddle of officers again and again," said Alison Flowers, U of C Invisible Institute.

The guy looked like a lunatic but that was completely unnecessary.
Cops are so poorly trained nowadays.

can someone please explain to me when our LEOs became such huge pussies?
I had my own father get the shite beat out of him as first responder to a domestic violence call. Dude was on PCP and my Dad clubbed him repeatedly as the guy assaulted him. People on PCP are practically impossible to restrain because of the drug.

Hmmmmm, did the officers know that?

Those who feel they have to reiterate that they are not in support of BLM because they see murder in this film shows how fricked up we are as a society. .

Dead guy was on PCP?
I don't think the punishment for that is death though.

Nope. How could they?

But the original investigation showed something different, according to the police union officials...

McDonald, according to police, had a dazed look, cut the tires of a police car, smashed a window and “was coming at the officer.” That’s when a single officer opened fire.
Pat Camde, the spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, said that night the preliminary investigation showed McDonald was a “very serious threat.”
“He now has the knife fully in his hand, going at one of the officers," Camden told reporters, “At that point the officer defends himself.”

I did not take it personal I just think certain situations make it possible to resolve the issue without a death involved. I understand emotions get involved and fear can take over but people should try to ensure the best outcome. I acknowledge this guy was a bad person but it is not on us to make life and death decisions based off of our opinions. I am sure this police officer would take it back if he could but the sad reality is that he cannot.

That's why we invented tasers.

I'm not saying it is, but a suspect is very dangerous and hard to control when they are on the drug. I'm pretty sure nonlethal means are almost ineffective.

And lying about it to justify the shoot. He really done now.

Chicago paid the family 5 million after previously settling another case for the same officer in the amount of $500,000
