My compressor just went out.

What's the ballpark price for a middle-class 4 ton ac unit (I'm thinking Rheem or similar) including installation (outside unit only). I'm waiting on a price from my AC guy, but is this the type of thing it's worth shopping around for?

How much of a difference does it make to step up to a more efficient unit?

More efficient unit makes a big difference. You should without a doubt shop around. This is one of the most expensive parts of an HVAC unit to replace. Check prices.

My unit is like 15 years old, so I want to replace the whole thing.

One place I called quoted me a range from $2600 to $4100 for Carrier units. Buddy at work said he buys Rheem and it's no more than $2,000 installed.

Won't you also have to most likely replace the a frame in the attic (or wherever it is) because don't they have to be matched? Or do only sizes have to be matched?

i got prices a few months ago, but for a 5 ton american standard.

the one thing this particualr guy kept asking was "how long do you plan on staying here?"

i assume he was asking because, why spend top dollar if i will only enjoy it a few years

it pays to live in the sticks, I guess?

But online I'm seeing prices of anywhere from $1,100 to $1,500 for the unit only. How much could installation possibly be? No way it takes more than a few hours. $5-800 of installation seems reasonable to me. Aren't they just connecting pipes and wiring?

must just be down here, because labor was as much if not more than the unit

Installing a new unit CORRECTLY takes time. Following the steps for the job to be done right takes a little time.

We paid 2600 to have a 5 ton Rheem installed. Just the outside unit using the old refrigerant type. Had a guy that did the work on the side that was a friend of a friend. I think the unit itself is only about $1k. Not sure how much refrigerant he used but he made good money for not much work. Had this done about 14 months ago, no problems so far.

I think this is going to be an issue for us. He tried to explain it to me on the phone, but I didn't quite follow.

R-22 is the old refrigerant. If we wanted to replace everything we would have had upgraded to the newer stuff. They are phasing out the production of the old refrigerant and it is getting expensive.

But my condenser (thing in the attic) is just a few years old and I didn't want to spend the money to have it replaced.

He also let us keep the old AC unit which I recycled. I think I got $60-$75 for the thing all taken apart.
