My 4th grader has one because his teacher encouraged them to bring it to use in class. He uses it for that class then it's in the backpack for the remainder of the day. We've had no issues of misuse other than he wants to text me other times during the day

You were probably also within walking distance of a pay phone if you broke down in a city area or lived in a town small enough that you'd feel comfortable stopping to help a kid broke down then. If the cell phone is available for them to carry back and forth to school, as someone who works in education and we're responsible for those kids until they walk through their door, I have no issue with that.

Back when I was in high school and flip phones were taking off, I'd use my flip phone to talk dirty to sluts and have them meet me in the library, bathroom, closet etc to get a quickie. Good times. I say cell phones shouldn't be allowed, students shouldn't be distracted like I was

My kid actually has a couple classes where they use them for school purposes. I don't think having them is a big problem. The problem is, when the teacher says to put it away, you put it away. SOME kids can't get that thru their skulls.
