Cell phone settings: earphone functions

This has always bugged me. If I am playing music on my phone and using the phone's speaker, I can plug in the earphones without the music stopping. If I am listening through the earphones and remove them, the music stops.
Is there a way to prevent that last thing from happening? I don't see anything in settings, but am I missing something?

Can't you just hit the play button that automatically pops up on your screen?

You'll get better answers at the nerd board, and you may want to include the model of your phone for better assistance.
