I normally would post this on MB, but figured I'd get a wide array of responses here (funny and serious responses welcomed). My question is for the car insurance experts.

Son turned 16 and wants to occasionally drive my 06 Tundra mostly on weekends to and from friends' houses. Eventually this truck will be his primary vehicle when I get a new one in the summer or fall. My question is about insurance coverage and premiums between now and time he has his own vehicle. The truck will remain in my name and only have liability coverage of 50/100/50. Think about increasing it.

Do I need to add him to my policy or not? My insurance wants $250/month just to add him as a rated driver on all my vehicles (3). I'm also told he is automatically covered under my policy as member of my household (without adding him and no increase in premium) as long as he has permission to drive my truck. But, eventually when he starts driving my truck full time and/or turns 17 he'll need to added to that trunk as the primary driver...thus insurance premium increase.

Of course, my insurance co wants me to pay more, but do I have to being that he is automatically covered?

TIA for helping clear this confusion.

If he lives with you then yes he should be added to the policy.

Permissive use is real, but that's not designed for family/household members.

If he's fully licensed...YES

Who told you this?? B/c that's untrue. If he's licensed and in your house hold he has to be on your policy as a driver. Now some companies rate them differently ,but for all intents and purposes he needs to be listed.

Uh, No.. They are covering their arse in the high likelihood your kid has a claim arise. If he was just a permit driver he doesn't have to be rated on you policy.
But you're saying he's taking it on the weekends alone means that he's got a full license. So as I've stated prior he has to be covered..

They don’t want you to pay more just for the hell of it. The hard fact is that young drivers are at a huge increase for causing accidents. Thus, the exposure- risk- to them having to pay a claim that is his fault needs to be charged for accordingly.

With regard to your first question about listing him as a driver. Most policies provide coverage for unlisted drivers to use the scheduled autos. Presuming you auto policy reads the same, your coverage will extend to when your son is driving the auto.

After his first wreck, they will know he is licensed and thus will adjust your premiums accordingly.

Also, generally at your renewal, your auto carrier may run a check on who is popping up as having a valid DL at your address. At this time, they may also discover him and he would have to be added at that point as well.

Sister in law and another person. Both work in the insurance biz. She said the insurance follows the car and the driver. As long as my truck is covered and he has permission to drive my truck then no need to add him as a driver to the policy. That's why I'm asking this question, bc didn't sound correct.

In general, anyone is covered while driving your vehicle as an occasional user. But if they are a member of your household or use the vehicle frequently, they will probably be excluded. Read your policy to see what it says.

Wait until you see how much it's going to cost you yearly for that.

Don't tell them anything but if he has a wreck or ticket they will find out, hello high premiums.

I'll be damn you discovered a loophole!!! Did you also know that it's unconstitutional that the federal government collects income tax and that you can get out of traffic tickets by declaring yourself a sovereign citizen?

It's not.. What they are referring to applies to someone say a Brother-in-law, neighbor, etc.. that borrows your vehicle and has their own policy.. Your son does not and if he's not covered elsewhere then if he gets into and accident you would run into a no play no pay situation.

I would not decrease any limits that you currently have in place for a 16 year old boy who is inexperienced at driving and will do boy things when with his friends or when trying to impress a young lady.

stop speaking in absolutes. Most carriers are not going to deny a claim involving a newly licensed child driver. Get over yourself.

It depends on your carrier. We have state farm and my agent told me we didn't have to add him unless we got him a vehicle. He was covered under our policy.

I wouldn't say shite. Go on about your business. I'd look into increasing liability limits though for sure. No way in hell am i comfortable with 50k limit.

That's what I'm being told. Is it law or per insurance carrier's policy?
