Car Dealership Accountability

So- I bought a truck from a dealership on Monday with an "as is" warranty. I've driven it fewer than 100 miles and the service engine light came on this morning. I'm taking it to the mechanic in the morning to see what's going on. My question- if it's something serious does the dealership have any responsibility in repairing it? TIA

you don't understand what as-is means?

They do not. They could be nice and help you out though.

have you at least contacted the dealership. they would be more willing to help if you discussed it with them before showing up with a bill from your mechanic.

I understand what "as is" means. That's not my question. If it's something major...something they definitely knew about... what are my options?

Check engine light is usually just something to do with emissions. Was it a Silverado?

The check engine light could be something as innocuous as a gas cap not tight. What did your prepurchase inspection show?
Don't tell them you took it to a mechanic and bring to them for help. If they lie about the problem or on the other hand take care of it. Then you know who you're dealing with.

Yeah, I wouldn't show up with a bill. I just want to get it diagnosed before I call them and start raising hell. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

id advise to have someone well versed look at an "as is" purchase before you sign the paperwork, not after, for future purchases.

Take it to autozone and let them tell you what the error code is.

Thank you for your words of wisdom

As is does not apply to deceptive tactics or fraud. Also if the dealer represents the vehicle as a certain way, such as clean or any of a number of ways then a warranty of limited scope is implied.

You obviously DON'T.
Neither do you. The law says different depending on circumstances.

Thanks LaFlyer. That was my main question- if they deliberately deceived me...

Most dealerships have the 30 day 50/50.
But usually if its a mom/pop stop, it hits the pavement, its YOUR problem. Nothing to protect you

"As is" is not a warranty. It's not even latin.
