I taught a class in New Mexico, and was driving to the Amarillo airport and low and behold, a DeSoto Parish police car passes me on the interstate.

Can they just freely do this or are there restrictions. I get going home, but that's what 550 miles?

They can if the conference in Vegas is "for training."

A lot of cops in Podunk towns lie about mileage use on the job and use cop cars for all personal matters because nobody is going to camp out and bust them for it.

Like they're reprimanding officers for using their patrol cars on personal time

Either prisoner transport or traveling from training/school.

If it's for training. Some parishes actually encourage off duty patrolmen to drive units as to show a bigger presence on the streets.

I work for GE. Was teaching tower rescue to some new hires (TSL/Tractel). We have a training facility in Tucumcari, NM.

And a lot of agencies make their officers drive to schools/training instead of flying.
