Solenoids can also get stuck and prevent shifting. Many shops only want to replace the whole thing. Pretty simple and cheap repair compared to changing the transmission.

A solenoid is sticking for the same reason that the third gear valve is sticking.
Transmissions work on hydraulic pressure. When the pressure build exceeds the spring tension the valve moves and your car shifts. Solenoids just replace spring pressure with electronic feedback from sensors.
At 103k the clutch plates are deteriorating. The clutch plates hold the drum in place to spin the planetary gears that turn the driveshaft.
Changing a solenoid as a cheap fix goes back to the Ford F250 and F350 trucks that had defective solenoids installed in the truck. That was a big recall that made its way into popular culture.

Morris Transmission on Choctaw. Probably won't be the cheapest, but my guess it would be among the best.
I posted in other threads, they did the transmission on my Silverado. It crapped out just before a hurricane (maybe last year's, it wasn't this year).
I called around to get estimates, as the truck is otherwise reliable and I didn't want to pay for a new truck. Maybe I was naive or whatever, but as I got quotes, I shared them with other places to see if anyone could do better than the others.
A couple other places (generally respected, or at least "known" in town) stopped me, and said "if Morris can get you in and do it at that price, you should go there".
I take that as the best recommendation available- it's from people in the business, acknowledging which one is good to go.
FWIW, the cost at Morris wasn't out of range of the others, apparently the issue is whether you can get in.

AGCO Transmission on Coursey Blvd saved me about $9000 on a transmission issue I had.
Would recommend!

I've used Caps on Florida Blvd. Honest, reliable and been in business for a long time.

Caps said he’d refuse it, would only put new trans or junkyard trans. He was super honest and I respected that.
