Camera - Sony or Fuji Mirrorless

To start - I am a photography novice, never have owned a "real" camera. My wife is pregnant (no pics) with our first child and we do a decent amount of traveling (or we did before the baby). I keep saying that I'd buy a camera before the next trip, but never sat down to do the research. My wife being pregnant has changed that and expedited the process.

I am set on buying a mirrorless camera. I am also set on buying Sony or Fuji, but I can't make a decision on the body. Going into this process I thought I'd spend anywhere from $2,000-2,500 so the money is there for a body/lens in that range, but after doing research I don't think I'll need to spend that to get a camera for my needs.

Right now I am between the Sony A6000 and the Fuji XT-30.

Since I've decided on mirrorless, a Sony body has been first with Fuji a clear second, but the more research I do the closer it's getting. I have a few hangups on both and I wanted y'alls opinion.

I am buying this camera for landscapes and baby. Undoubtedly I'll be shooting more of the baby. One thing I have read is that Sony has an advantage on the Eye-AF and this makes a large difference in shooting portraits. How significant is this? This is a big hangup for me and the main reason why I haven't committed to a Fuji.

Another seemingly advantage to Sony is in post production. From what I have read, it is harder (not as smooth?) to edit a Fuji photo as it is Sony. I don't plan on doing a lot of heavy editing, but I do plan on doing some.

I really like the ergonomics of the Fuji. I went to a store last week and the Fuji was easier to handle and had a more natural feel to it. I have also read where the lens for the Fuji are much better than Sony's.

So, Sony or Fuji for a guy looking to take a few (a lot) of pictures of his kid/travel with an APS-C camera?

Thanks for any and all recommendations and opinions.

Dpreview and Dcresource are good review sites.

I have a mirrorless and still use phone except for stuff I have to zoom in on

I was in the same boat...New baby, travel as much as possible, photography novice. Wife gave me the A6000 for Christmas last year and I absolutely love it.

Nah. I use Lightroom and no problems whatsoever.

Your can get Capture one Express for Fuji for free.

Fuji autofocus is every bit as good as Sony it also has stellar color reproduction

You've never owned a camera, and you're going to buy a $2K for your first?

Why?

Edit: I'm just wondering, that's all.

Way overrated.

Sony is the best full frame mirrorless
Fuji is the best Crop sensor mirrorless

Nikons not even in the ballpark yet.

To add to what Roger is telling you, Sony will have more third party lens options by a wide margin.

That said, Fuji glass is exquisite and that's pretty universally agreed-upon even by non-Fuji folks.

I shoot Fuji FWIW.

I'm not, but I had planned too. That's just what I had in mind that I'd need to spend to get something that I wouldn't want to upgrade in six months. Turned out not to be true. Not upset about it..

Any decent lenses will be expensive.

If anything has been a consistent it is that Fuji glass is superior to Sony's glass. How big of a margin between Fuji and the third-party suppliers?

Also how much of difference does the Eye-AF make? That is honestly my biggest hangup with Fuji. I feel comfortable with everything else.

The best thing for me to do may be to rent both cameras for a few days and decide from there.

I really appreciate all of the comments so far.

Eh, not a lot. Most higher end cameras regardless of manufacture have excellent AF. Tracking fearptures of any camera will do a great job of it

If you're a professional portrait guy it might be of value.

Sony caught Nikon and Cannon flat footed with their mirrorless cameras. I haven't looked into Fuji.

Just saying the Sony would be the safest bet as they are the leader in this segment.

My wife has one. Took the wife some convincing when it was time to replace her POS Canon Rebel. For not much more money the Sony A6000 is superior in every way.

Great idea.

Use Fuji XF lenses.

Both take fantastic pictures. The deciding point will be glass and how intuitive ve each are to you. Fuji is dial friendly, Sony is menu friendly.

Regardless of brand (Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Fuji), mirror or mirrorless, iPhone or android, pictures, portraits, photos taken will be only as good as the photographer behind the lens. .

No arguments there. I feel like I’ve done all I can with an iPhone and want something a little more powerful.
