Been there. Started with the beet pulp. Horse wouldn't eat it. Went to a low starch bailed grass by triple crown. Great product, but expensive and had to drive an hour to stock up on it.

I'm currently using a purina product. I believe it is called "low starch". You can google it. It has done the trick and is fairly easy to find. I keep mine in a dirt lot to keep them off of high starch grass, and supplement Bermuda hay as needed. It's not by the book, but I've had a number of horses with this condition and it has worked for me. Now that the spring has passed, the starch levels in the grass will decrease and you won't have as many concerns. But it is a job keeping these horses sound and healthy.

Don't be afraid to let him be a little lean. Good luck.

and don't forget to work him. Exercise is pretty important with EMS.

Gotta be over that by now. I think they get bonuses for races won after (g1s at least) so I'm sure the price went up Saturday. I read somewhere there were extra incentives thrown in.

I gotta give Zayat credit for wanting to keep him on the track. Hes risking a lot of money should something unfortunate happen.

turn him out

I am afraid he's going to lose his street cred with the herd. He's the Alpha boss – right now most of the day the other horses stay in their huddle near him. After a while a mare who thinks she needs to be the alpha bitch, will lead them away and he goes nuts.
When I let him out, him and the uppity biotch are going to have a little come to Jesus, I bet. I don't think it's going to work out well for him wearing that goofy muzzle. He'll look like the special ed kid wearing that special helmet. I worry about his self-esteem...

I'm so happy he's going to keep
Running. Got into some very heated fb arguments today with non racing horse people who think he should be retired before he's "run into the ground" and that he's broken so many records it's greedy to keep running him. I haven't seen him break a single record yet.

Horse has only run 8 times. They kept posting about eight belles. I somehow kept myself from pointing out the lack of unbridled's song in his pedigree was a good step toward not seeing him shatter both ankles.

Hate to be an arse but it's better for the gene pool that he's gone.

I am glad too, but whoever bought his breeding rights are crapping their pants. I read an article the other day where Zayat said that the holder's of the breeding rights have zero say in how AP Is managed until he retires. Good for Zayat - he's never been one of my favorite owners, but good on him for this move../

Eh, he's not nearly expensive as a lot of others. Cigar was in the $50 million range, big brown ( ) too. I'll try to find the list.

Fu peg was expensive too. Think I saw it on drf live and google is not helping.

gave him supplements

Never had a supplement - ever. He's a very thick necked Paso - they are prone to it, from what I gather. He's developing a thick crest to his already thick neck and his belly is getting heavy, soooo vet says special diet. No Ryan's buffet for this big boy. I am so very careful with my Pasos - with all the rain we've had the grass is still too sweet to let them have at it. I am scared to death of laminitis...

I don't think they disclosed how much was paid for the rights - but folks are going to be throwing money at them hand over fist for an AP cover...I bet it's going to get obscene..

Thanks for the info! I am switching him and my other 3 Pasos to a special feed by Nutrena-probably similar to the one you feed from Purina.
This has just thrown me for a loop.
I feel like I have a bedridden horse. I don't show anymore so my folks are stalled for only a few hours each day or if the weather is really cold and rainy. They don't like being "up".

I doubt it goes over any of the 3 I listed above as far as rights go unless he wins out including the bc.

I'd say he stands for $125,000 ish first year if he doesn't win the classic. I'd he wins that, he'll go higher. I can only think of 2 for sure, maybe 3 stallions standing for over $100,000 and they all have proven crops running and winning big races.

I was wrong. Bernardini dropped to $85,000. Was looking at the wrong year.

The market ain't what it used to be.

If I had a mare and a choice, I'd go to ap's daddy over him. Better female side to me.

Maybe I'm just being biased bc his mom is by a stallion who was demoted to louisiana and who mainly throws sprint types.

After his first crop hits the track and shows more than cheap speed id go to him.

But I'm too poor for anything but wishing :)

And sorry I have no advice for muzzles! My tbs, while not hard keepers, definitely don't need to be kept off the grass

Well he's already sold the rights, so if AP breaks down is is out nothing, nada. Couldn't figure out why he sold the rights at first - but Zayat is smart - he owns full rights to AP's sire Pioneer of the Nile and his cover fee is going to go through the roof...

I bet he goes sky high.why breed to an unknown when you can breed to a horse who has already sired a triple crown winner? Smart, smart, smart.

Think Affirmed/alydar : Alydar was the "looser" but he was "the stud" for awhile. I can't remember, but I think they might have been closely related through the "dancer" lines. Affirmed wasn't quite this sire as was his rival.
Just goes to show at some point it's a crapshoot!

It's always a crapshoot

Bred my guy to sprint on the grass. Looks like he's going to be 2 turns all the way

Oh well.

Winstar has to be ecstatic. Especially since carpe diem hasn't quite turned into what they want (strange to say that of a g1 winner).

Oh wow! Your's actually race! I didn't realize!
I have only had track losers that I turned into eventing horses. I think I paid less than 200$ for my first one years ago (don't want to think how many years it was!!
